Briar Hill is the oldest midwife practice in Calgary.
What is Midwifery Care?

Midwives are specialists in normal pregnancy and childbirth. Midwifery is based on the principles of health and well-being, recognizing that conception, pregnancy, birth and breastfeeding are natural life processes. We actively encourage informed choice by providing relevant, objective information about care alternatives, including risks and benefits, to facilitate informed decision making.

Midwives can and do access other health care professions where needed for consultation. Briar Hill Midwives is the longest established practice of midwives in Calgary. We provide personalized continuous care to families throughout their childbearing years.

Cost of Services

Midwifery services in Alberta became publicly funded in 2009. Since that time, midwifery has grown in Alberta. From prenatal appointments to labour and birth, immediate and ongoing postnatal care of mother and baby, Briar Hill Midwives is ready to help every step of the way.

Our Philosophy:

Midwifery is traditionally holistic and is grounded in the principles of health and well being, recognizing that conception, pregnancy, birth and breastfeeding are natural life processes.

We at Briar Hill Midwives believe in your innate strength and ability to give birth. Parents have the right and responsibility to make informed, intelligent, and sensitive decisions about choices in pregnancy and the manner in which they choose to give birth. Our role is to provide skilled council, faith in your ability, a listening ear and the wisdom of experience. We provide vigilance and gentle guidance throughout your journey of pregnancy, labour, birth, breastfeeding, and early parenting.

We are honoured and excited to be on this journey with you.

Briar Hill Midwives in Calgary believe in holistic care.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

We are grateful to live, work and play on the traditional territories of the Blackfoot Confederacy, including the Siksika, Piikani and Kainai Nations; the Stoney-Nakoda, including the Chiniki, Bearspaw and Wesley Nations; and the Tsuut’ina Nation. Southern Alberta is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta, Region 3.

As birth workers, we acknowledge the long standing relationship these original caretakers of the lands in and around Calgary (Mohkinstsis) have with traditional birth work, and we aim to create space for indigenous voices. Our space in treaty 7 will welcome and increase access for indigenous people and indigenous birth workers.

We are dedicated to supporting individuals of all faiths, ethnicities, sexual orientations, and gender identities.
